Mango expands logistics centre in Spain with €35 million investment

Published
Jun 16, 2021

Spanish fashion brand Mango has launched a 90,000 square-metre expansion project at its logistics centre in Lliçà d’Amunt, Barcelona with an investment of €35 million ($42.4 million). It aims to reduce the cost of preparing online orders by 25%.

Mango plans that the new building at its Lliçà d’Amunt centre will become partially operational by the second half of 2022 and will reach full omni-channel capacity by 2023, the brand announced in a press release. The new facilities will be designed to house the business’ expanding logistics and support its new business lines.

The expansion will of the logistics centre will make it possible to send orders directly to the final customer and increase operational speed. Mango is on track to meet its construction deadlines despite the pandemic, it said.

“The increase we are experiencing in e-commerce confirms that planning this expansion was the right decision, given that it will allow us to automate certain tasks in order to absorb the anticipated volume,” said Mango’s CEO Toni Ruiz in a press release. “Maintaining investments in strategic projects that will allow us to anticipate future needs and become more competitive is a priority for the company.”

The expansion project will focus on providing logistics solutions which are more specific to e-commerce, according to Ruiz. New automated systems to complement the existing functionalities of the centre will also be introduced over the three floors of the expansion project including a pouch sorter, Automated Mobile Robots, and a shipping sorter. The expanded logistics centre will be able to process an extra 10,000 garments per hour bringing its total hourly garment processing capacity to 85,000 pieces of clothing.

Mango has also pledged to carry out its expansion in line with responsible building practices. The roof of the building will be fitted with solar panels to supply the energy needed to generate the centre’s hot water and electric vehicle charging points and rainwater will be collected from the roof to supply the nearby Can Dunyó wetlands area.
