Retail stores in Scottish shopping centres were finally allowed to reopen on Monday in what has been described as the country’s “most significant easing of lockdown”.

All non-essential shops were required to close in March to halt the spread of Covid-19, although stores with outdoor entrances and exits were allowed to resume trading from June 29.

The country’s top shopping centres including Hammerson’s Silverburn and Intu Braehead welcomed shoppers back this Monday after implementing extensive safety measures.

Shoppers must wear a face covering in retail environments and the Scottish government is asking everyone to maintain social distancing. Many shopping destinations have also installed hand sanitation stations, floor markings and designated queuing zones.

Some queues could be seen outside popular stores on Monday morning as shoppers treated themselves to some retail therapy after months of staying at home.

Further coronavirus restrictions will be lifted from Wednesday, with indoor pubs, cafes and restaurants returning to business. Children and young people are permitted to play organised outdoor contact sports and dentists can offer some routine treatments.

Museums, galleries, cinemas, libraries and hairdressers can also reopen from July 15, while beauty and nail salons can start offering treatments from July 22.
