David Hunter has been appointed as the new non-executive chairman of Capital & Regional, the property company behind shopping centres in Blackburn, Luton and Walthamstow.

His appointment is proposed to take effect at the conclusion of the 2020 annual general meeting on 20 May.

Hunter will take over from Hugh Scott-Barrett, who spent 12 years at the company, including nine years as chief executive officer and three years as chairman.

Lawrence Hutchings, chief executive of Capital & Regional commented: "I'd like to thank Hugh for his invaluable contribution to Capital & Regional over the past 12 years, during a time of significant change for the sector.”

Hunter has extensive experience supporting growth in UK and international real estate businesses. He is currently chairman at Custodian and a non-executive director of GCP Student Living. Earlier in his career, he was a leading fund manager, most significantly from 2001 to 2004 when, as managing director of Aberdeen Property Investors, he oversaw the business's £6.5 billion UK and international assets.

"David's extensive experience and commercial knowledge will be invaluable to Capital & Regional as we look to further enhance our portfolio and deliver on our community shopping centre strategy, on behalf of our shareholders,” Hutchings said.

Hunter is set to join the company at a moment of increasing distress in the UK retail property sector. Capital & Regional owns seven shopping centres across England, including The Mall Wood Green and The Mall Walthamstow, and as such, it is vulnerable to the same challenges that threaten rivals, including low footfall and growing retail vacancy rates.

Commenting on his appointment, Hunter said: “These are clearly challenging times for the retail property sector, but with the support of an excellent management team, I hope to contribute effectively to the implementation of the clearly identified community shopping centre strategy on behalf of our shareholders."
