The American group has announced the closure of 5 Macy’s stores and one Bloomingdale’s following poor in-store results at these locations.

Locations in Pasadena, Belmont, Honolulu, St Paul and Houston will close as well as Bloomingdale’s in Fashion Show Home Store in Las Vegas. After the closure, the group will have a 798-strong retail network across 45 states, 13 of which are Bloomingdale’s stores.

“We remain committed to operating a successful and growing stores business as part of our company’s omnichannel strategy for serving customers wherever, whenever and however they prefer to shop,” said Karen M. Hoguet, Macy’s chief financial officer. “This leads us to open new stores where we see the opportunity to fill gaps in important markets, as well as to make the tough decision to selectively close underperforming stores that no longer meet our performance requirements or where leases are not being renewed.”

The announcement comes as the group reports a 2.5% increase in sales for November and December. For 2011, sales reached 25.9 billion dollars, 3.3% up on the previous year. The company does a large amount of its business online, with internet sales jumping 51.7% between December 2011 and December 2012.
