Leading designers, academics and executives from the fashion industry will attend an evidence hearing hosted by the Environmental Audit Committee at the Victoria & Albert Museum on 13 November as part of an inquiry.

The session, open to members of the public, will explore sustainability issues and discuss solutions for cutting waste and improving conditions of garment workers.

Designers Phoebe English; Claire Bergkamp, sustainability & innovation director at Stella McCartney; Graeme Raeburn, designer; Professor Dilys Williams, director of Fashion Design for Sustainability and Jenny Grice, from upcyclers collective Waste Not, Want Not, are some of the confirmed witnesses for the hearing.

“The way we design, produce and discard our clothes has a huge impact on people and our planet. From sweatshop factories, to waste, pollution and climate changing emissions,” commented the chair of the Environmental Audit Committee, Mary Creagh.

“We have teamed up with the V&A to explore some of the issues highlighted in its Fashion from Nature exhibition and examine how the fashion sector can remodel itself to be more sustainable. I would encourage anyone who has a passion for this issue or just wants to learn more to come and join us.”

The event is part of an inquiry launched by the committee to investigate the social and environmental impact of fast-fashion retailers.
