Fit-out work has started at the new location, which will house the retailer’s clothing, home and food offering.

Explaining why the company is moving to new premises, Marks & Spencer said that the Riverside development, a joint venture between Genr8 and Kajima, in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council, will benefit from a catchment shopper population of over 1 million people.

The area has also potential for a further 12,000 family homes, and Rochdale Council is investing funds to create a new transport interchange.

In total, the new shopping destination will create approximately 200,000 sq ft of retail and leisure accommodation at the heart of Rochdale town centre. Leisure facilities such as Hollywood Bowl’s Putt Stars indoor golf facility and a Reel Cinema will ensure it attracts families looking for entertainment.

Marks & Spencer said in the clothing department, a click & collect point will be easily accessible to support online orders and the store will offer contemporary, easy-to-wear stylish clothing including a big focus on M&S’s key categories – such as denim, knitwear, footwear and T-shirts.

Sacha Berendji, retail, operations and property director at Marks & Spencer said: “M&S is changing and this has meant rigorously considering where we open stores as we reshape our estate. We’re focusing on locations that can best serve busy family shoppers – convenient locations with a great retail & leisure mix are key. Our store will be designed to offer everything families need for an easy shopping experience.”

The British retailer is planning to close hundreds of sites by 2022, and relocate or redevelop a large number of its estate. Recently, the brand opened its first clothing store in the South West in ten years at Kingsley Village and a further site will open at Nottingham Giltbrook next summer.
