M&S adds self-service tills for fashion in-store

Published
Mar 2, 2023

Consumers are used to paying for the fashion products at self-service tills when they shop in supermarkets, but not so much in stores that specialise in fashion. That could all change now as M&S is planning to direct more people to self-service tills when they pay for their clothing and home goods in its stores.

The company is rolling out new tills in a large number of stores with the tills being similar to those used for grocery products but tailored more towards clothing.

The tills will appear in 10 more stores by the end of this month, with more to come later this year. However, it's not removing the option for shoppers to pay at manned tills.

The aim is to “make shopping with M&S quicker, easier and more convenient”.

The company had been trialling the tills in 20 shops for some time and self-service/queue-less options for fashion shoppers have been a major focus for retailers in the clothing segment.

In Uniqlo branches, for instance, self-service tills include the option to put multiple items into a receptacle and the till instantly reading and registering the labels to avoid the need for individually scanning each one.
