M&S is favourite brand for UK women, John Lewis, Boots and Dove also strong

M&S’s fashion operations may be struggling to find the growth that the retailer needs but the brand is still hugely popular with UK women, a new brand ranking shows.

M&S is popular with UK women but mainly with 35-plus consumers

The YouGov Impression Score Rankings, compiled from BrandIndex surveys of around 2,000 women daily, saw it scoring 58, ahead of number two John Lewis on 54.

The next three brands in the list are Heinz, followed by health and beauty retail giant Boots  and BBC One. Unilever’s global skincare brand Dove, which has this week recommitted to its ‘real beauty’ positioning and launch d anew campaign shot by Mario Testino, came in at number seven.

But while M&S is popular overall, it may struggle over time as it doesn't not figure in the top five for younger consumers. It comes top for the 34-54 group and the over-55s. But the under-35s rank Ikea and Ben and Jerry’s first, followed by Boots, Heinz and YouTube.

YouGov BrandIndex director Michael Stacey said: "Despite reports of Marks & Spencer enduring a troubling time, particularly with regards to fashion, our findings indicate that underlying brand perception remains strong among women - which could be key if retail conditions deteriorate in the months ahead, as some analysts expect.”
