About 4,600 employees will be redeployed as the retail chain prepares to face a surge in demand for food amid growing rumours that the UK could impose an Italian-style lockdown.

M&S staff are also being provided with additional hygiene products and extra cleaning is being carried out across all stores.

Additionally, the company has introduced a contact-free delivery service for all Clothing, Home, Flowers, Hampers and Wine orders, which means customers will have the option of having their deliveries left safely at their doors.

Starting from tomorrow Friday, and then every Monday and Thursday, the first hour of trading will be reserved for older and more vulnerable customers. NHS and emergency service workers will also have a dedicated time slot each Tuesday and Friday morning.

The announcement reveals Marks & Spencer plans to continue operating despite the global health crisis. Many fashion brands, especially international names, have closed their stores in the UK to protect their staff, but as of Thursday evening there was no official rule forcing clothing retailers to close their doors.
