Louis Vuitton has linked up with the noted Swiss artist Urs Fischer to develop a new multi-faceted collab collection, in the latest example of artistic teamwork by the French luxury brand.

Entitled Louis Vuitton x Urs Fischer, the collection boasts a wide range of leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories by the multi-disciplinary New York-based artist.

Noted for his roots in subversive movements like Neo-Dada and the Situationist International, Fischer once constructed a Swiss style chalet out of loaves of bread.

No wacky nourishment for Vuitton, but some definitely bold new design ideas, or what Fischer terms “memory sketches,” several strikingly reimagined versions of the Vuitton Monogram print or the house’s initials done in hand-drawn form.  Carefully adapted to suit each product – like the black and white high-tops with side zips or chunky down jackets.

“Given the Louis Vuitton Monogram’s ubiquitous status, I chose to hand-draw it in a really spontaneous way, almost like sketching it from memory,” explained the 48-year-old artist, and former spouse of fashion plate Tara Subkoff.

Vuitton has a long tradition of working with fine artist to develop innovated takes on their key products; from Takashi Murakami, Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince, to most recently limited-edition 3D-printed reproductions of paintings on handbags from the label's Artycapucines collection, including Henry Taylor's 'A Young Master'.

Fischer’s creations are available in two colorways, black and red, and black and white, with his new Monogram the key decorative motif. Also part of the mix are seven special-edition bags – a Keepall, Cabas, Onthego, two Neverfulls, Speedys, Pochettes Accessoires, and a hard-sided beauty case – that employ the Urs Fischer Monogram via an innovative tuffetage treatment that uses velvet-like material to create extra texture and tactile relief.  Key looks include taut little bomber parkas, priced at $3,500 and short, technical jersey dresses at $2,700.

The collaboration also features a series of whimsical characters from Fischer – playful animals and objects united in pocket-squares by the artist, whose famed Untitled (Lamp/Bear), a 23-foot-high, 20-ton bronze bear with lamp sticking out of its head, now adorns the Hamad International Airport at Doha.

The Louis Vuitton x Urs Fischer collection launched this week in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide.
