London’s Savile Row to undergo improvement works

Published
Feb 20, 2018

Significant development to smarten up London’s famous bespoke tailoring street Savile Row is now underway, with Westminster Council, Transport for London and members of the Savile Row Bespoke Association investing almost £1m on the revamp.

The scheme aims to improve the public realm and overall customer experience on Savile Row, with a view to maintaining its position as the world’s leading hub of bespoke tailoring.

The initiative, led by Westminster Council’s Savile Row Strategic Group, will see footways on the street replaced and widened, the carriageway reconstructed in a slightly narrower configuration and silver granite parking pads installed on the west side of the street.

The Savile Row Bespoke Association said the new design will emphasize the “overall elegance and amenity of the street” by drawing attention to the lower ground floor workshops. It will also rationalise the kerbside parking and waiting and loading zones to improve views across the street and facilitate pedestrian crossing.

Located in Mayfair in Central London, Savile Row has a history accommodating bespoke tailors and has become an icon of high-end menswear in the UK. It is currently lined with scores of renowned tailors including Henry Poole & Sons, Gieves & Hawkes, William Hunt and Davies & Son.

The works on Savile Row are due to be completed in the autumn this year.
