John Lewis sick pay: will keep same level for unvaccinated staff

Some retailers, including Next and Nutmeg clothing brand owner Morrisons, have said they’ll pay only statutory sick pay for staff forced to self-isolate due to contact with someone who has Covid if they’re unvaccinated. But John Lewis isn’t among them, it has revealed.

The department stores operator has said all staff will continue to get full company sick pay regardless of their vaccination status. The business said it doesn’t “believe it’s right” to treat workers differently based on their vaccination status.

Given that the company is owned by its staff — known as Parters — it may even have been difficult for it had it wanted to offer different sick pay levels for some of them.

The retailer shared the news a LinkedIn blog post with group operations director Andrew Murphy saying: “We’re not going to make any change of this type.” He also said it was making no judgement about the policies of other retailers.

The company employs as many as 70,000 people between its department stores and its Waitrose supermarkets.

However, it has been a vocal supporter of the vaccination programme, giving staff time off to get their jabs.

Recent rule changes in the four UK nations mean that unvaccinated people still need to self-isolate for 10 days if they’ve had contact with a Covid sufferer, while those who’ve been jabbed don’t have to.
