The fall of Easter this year meant that British department store retailer John Lewis saw an extra day's trading in the week to April 9, due to the non like-for-like timing of Easter Sunday.

The extra day helped results in the week, which rose 15.1%, up from £68.80m in 2015/16 to £79.22m in 2016/17. John Lewis saw strong trade across both shops and online, with home sales especially strong - up 21.7% year-on-year. The textile and Furniture categories did especially well.

The launch of John Lewis' new Smart Home concept resulted in a +19% uplift in sales of Smart Home products at the Oxford Street branch.

Fashion sales are still affected by the cooler spring weather, but Barry Matheson, Retail Services Director, John Lewis, said that a good week for Beauty and Menswear meant that Fashion finished the week at +11.4%.

The results are good news for John Lewis, after the timing of Easter led to a 2.3% fall in sales in the week to April 2.
