Sales almost reached a hundred million pounds at British department store retailer John Lewis in the week to January 9, up 15.6% to £99.55m.

The retailer said it saw strong performances across all channels. Online sales rose 25.8 and at a directorate level, fashion sales were up 15.4%.

John Lewis also announced that it has appointed James Prince head of branch at its department store in Leeds. The new store is opening in autumn and will be one of the largest outside of London. The retailer is investing £37m in the location, which will have 550 employees and be the anchor tenant of the Victoria Gate development in Leeds.

Prince is currently head of the branch at John Lewis Sheffield, but lives in Leeds. He said: "I'm delighted to be taking on this new challenge and look forward to establishing our shop in the centre of Leeds and in the heart of the local community. I have enjoyed my time in Sheffield, particularly working with the team based here who are a credit to the store. I have also valued being involved in city initiatives such as the Sheffield BID. Leeds is my home and I'm incredibly passionate about this city. I can't wait to recruit a new team of Partners and reveal the shop to our customers in the autumn of 2016."
