Street, who started his career as a graduate trainee at the John Lewis Partnership in 1985, will offer advice to both ministers and civil servants as a member of the departmental board.

The Lead Non-Executive Director supports the Secretary of State in his or her role as Chair of the Board and liaises closely with the government-wide Lead Non-Executive Director.

Andy Street has been Managing Director of John Lewis since 2007 and has led the business through times of significant change in both the economy and the broader retail industry. He also chairs the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and performs as Vice Chairman of Performances Birmingham Limited, which is responsible for running the city's Symphony and Town Halls.

The John Lewis boss, who has also been a member of the Prime Minister's Business Advisory Group, was awarded a CBE in June for his services to the economy.
