As it prepares to open its first flagship store, online and mail-order retailer Joe Browns has reported that sales surged in the year to June.

The company recorded a 23% rise in direct sales during the financial year and this saw it exceeding its ambitious budget by 6%.

The news puts it in the select club of UK retailers that are doing well in an undeniably challenging market. And many of those that are outperforming have shared characteristics such as an online focus, or features such as low prices and a very clear target market while larger, longer-established names struggle to keep up.

Simon Brown, MD and Founder of the company, said: “Despite tough marketplace conditions we have had an amazing year.” He added that the firm has received a strong customer response to each of its collections.

But while the company’s main area of operation has been direct sales, the opening of its first flagship is a key step for the brand. It will open at the giant Meadowhall mall in Sheffield.

On completion this autumn, the new store, spanning almost 4,000 sq ft, will form part of the shopping centre’s £60 million regeneration.

“We believe the brand will bring a point of difference to the Sheffield shopping scene and be a go-to destination for free-thinking, spontaneous individuals who want their fashion choices to match their lust for life,” Brown said.
