Japanese fashion event ‘Tokyo Girls Collection’ (TGC), launched in 2005, is set to take place at the UN headquarters in New York in spring 2018. It will be the first fashion event ‘for the promotion of sustainable development goals’ attended by representatives from each UN country, alongside participating UN staff.

The biannual event, taking place in spring and autumn, has focused on themes of international promotion of ‘girls’ culture.’

February 2015 saw the event celebrate its 20th edition, which echoed the female empowerment themes of the UN’s ‘One Woman Campaign,’ and was supported by the organization Friends of the United Nations Asia-Pacific.

Since then, the TGC Executive Committee has moved towards the cultivation of activities in support of both women in disaster areas and of UN-advocated programs such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the event was visited by UN ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury in September 2015 and March 2016. As a result of his thorough appreciation of TGC activities and the awareness raised by the event, the collaboration is set to continue at the next edition, scheduled as a commemorative event for the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, on the 21st May.

TGC has previously rolled out overseas initiatives, holding an event at Paris' Japan Expo in 2006, as well as continuing to expand in Asia (in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore). July 2004 marked TGC’s first independent overseas event, in Bangkok, Thailand.
