Jakke extends offer into ready-to-wear

Published
Apr 4, 2023

Ethical London-based fashion label Jakke is moving beyond its faux fur roots and for SS23 has launched a variety of ready-to-wear styles for the first time — from shirting, to matching co-ords, dresses and lightweight trousers and shorts.

Footwear also shows up for the first with the launch of the Leah vegan leather sandal.

Founder and Creative Director Nina Hopkins has drawn inspiration from British painter David Hockney’s A Bigger Splash California pool scene artwork. Hockney had said that everyone in California was calmer and less tense and Hopkins added that it’s “how I want people to feel when they wear this collection”.

The California inspiration goes further with several cactus references such as on a graphic T-shirt and a cactus print co-ord, as well as an uneven green stripe pattern which is seen throughout the collection and is a nod to the stripes of a cactus. The two different shades of blue in the collection “represent the juxtaposition of a pool against the piercing blue Californian sky”.

The pieces use recycled and reused materials in the production process with the inclusion of organic fabrics and biodegradable Tercel, as well as recycled polyester.

This move clearly makes commercial sense for the label and allows it to progress beyond a largely-cool-weather-focused profile to being an all-year brand.

The label was founded in East London by Hopkins in 2015 and focused on being animal-friendly and cruelty-free. It was previously awarded Best Faux Fur Brand and Best Wool-Free Brand by PETA, as well as Best Vegan Brand in the 2021 Marie Claire Sustainability Awards.
