ROME, Jan 15, 2009 (AFP) - Italy's tax office has fined fashion designer Valentino 33 million euros (43 million dollars), rejecting his claim that he had transferred residence to London 10 years ago, the weekly Diva reported.

Rome's tax office claimed the sum after dismissing Valentino Garavani's claim of London residence as "fictitious", the magazine said.

Officials are also pursuing the designer's associate Giancarlo Giammetti for 22 million euros.

A statement issued on behalf of the two men said the tax authorities had investigated them in the past and approved their status.

"If today, they want to reopen the case in this unexpected and surprising way, Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti will as always be at their disposal to provide any information that might be asked of them by the competent services," the statement added.

A year ago at the age of 75, Valentino retired from the fashion world after a 45-year international career.
