No end appears to be in sight for an £86m redevelopment of Intu Broadmarsh in Nottingham after its owner halted construction work in March.

While work has restarted on major projects across the UK over the past few weeks, shopping centre owner Intu has said it doesn’t know when construction at the mall will resume.

The company was halfway through its redevelopment project before the UK went into lockdown on March 23. The multi-million-pound transformation is due to complete in summer 2021.

“Given the current impact on construction work from coronavirus and the need to close all but essential retail, we have taken the difficult decision to stop all work on the redevelopment of intu Broadmarsh, and to take the time to review the situation further,” a spokesperson for Intu said. “This is an evolving situation and until we are through these current issues we are not in a position to confirm when work will start back on site.”

The news comes as cash-strapped Intu moves forward with its strategy to fix its balance sheet. On Friday, the listed company said it secured some breathing space from lenders while it copes with the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.
