Korean fashion designer Younchan Chung of The-Sirius has won the top accolade at the International Fashion Showcase awards on Sunday at Somerset House.

British Fashion Council

The event, dedicated to showcasing emerging international designers with a series of specially-commissioned and curated fashion exhibitions at Somerset House, presented the International Fashion Showcase Designer Award to Younchan Chung of The-Sirius for his impressive design showcased in the Korean installation.

For the first time, the winning designer will have the unique opportunity to showcase his collection at Milan Fashion Week, which is another fashion platform supported by Mercedes-Benz.

Designers Katerina Plamitzerova from Czech Republic and Vanessa Schindler from Switzerland also received special mentions.

The country award was given to India for its exhibition ‘The Indian Pastoralists’. India was selected from 26 participating countries, including Austria, Chile, China, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Panama, Slovakia, Taiwan and Zimbabwe.

The Indian presentation hosted works by Ikai by Ragini Ahuja, Kaleekal, Ka-Sha by Karishma Shahani Khan, P.E.L.L.A. and Antar-Agni by Ujjawal Dubey; and of Wasim Khan as exhibition designer and Gautam Vazirani as curator.

The International Fashion Showcase Curation Award was presented to Wojciech Dziedzic and Agnieszka Jacobson–Cielecka of Poland

“The theme of Local/Global has resonated in profound reflections on the environment, identity and the strands which bind people together through generations. Quite apart from the imagination and quality of design and the curation, the conversations exchanged between the exhibitors and visitors have been extraordinarily enlightening - human experiences which have actively promoted understanding, mutual respect and delight in creativity,” said Sarah Mower, BFC ambassador and chair of the judging panel.

The International Fashion Showcase is arranged over 14 rooms at Somerset House, 13 of which represent a country. There is also a group installation which features designers from nine further nations.

The free exhibition runs until 21 February.
