The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) will replace the Office for the Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM). The community trademark will from now on be designated as 'European Union Trademark (EUT)'.

These two innovations are the result of the coming into force of the new regulations 2015/2424 issued by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe. The changes will be soon followed by a modification in the fees due to OHIM.

OHIM was launched in 1994 and claimed to have handled more than a million and a half trademark applications "coming from practically all of the countries and regions of the world."

EUIPO is currently the EU's largest decentralised agency, since it is located in Alicante, Spain. The institution handles the registration of EUTs as well as those of registered community models and designs (RCMD), providing protection in that particular field in the EU's 28 countries.
