More than 400 customers queued outside Carsch-Haus in Düsseldorf in a bid to be the first to get their hands on designer bargains at Saks Off 5th’s first European store. The retailer, owned by Hudson’s Bay Company, sells premium and designer brands at reduced prices, and the opening in Düsseldorf marks its debut in Europe.

“We see a lot of potential for Saks Off 5th in Germany. With us, customers can enjoy a unique combination of exclusive products at majorly reduced price points in a beautifully designed shopping outlet – a concept that has been known and appreciated by customers in the USA for years. In the German market, the concept is entirely new,” said Wayne Drummond, President of Saks Off 5th Europe.

Hudson’s Bay Company, also owner of German department store Galeria Kaufhof, has been operating the premium off-price retailer Saks Off 5th in the US and Canada for many years, and is now looking to benefit from the outlet centre boom in Europe.

“By changing our assortment frequently, shopping at Saks Off 5th becomes a journey of discovery where customers are continually surprised with new products,” said Berna Bartosch, chief merchandising officer of the discount retailer.

Last night’s launch party was attended by VIP guests and celebrities including Eva Padberg, Franziska Knuppe, Sara Nuru, actor Benjamin Sadler and TV presenter Jochen Schropp.

The Düsseldorf flagship houses more than 3,500 designer pieces, accessories, shoes, jewellery and homeware over five floors. While collections are slightly off-season, the retailer’s convenient price points keep customers coming back. The assortment includes everything from top luxury brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Armani to mid-market labels.

Hudson’s Bay Company revealed earlier this week it could open as many as 40 outlets for its Saks Off 5th banner in Europe. Further stores are due to launch in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg and Rotterdam over the summer, with the company expecting to open a total of 10 stores during fiscal 2017.
