UK footwear maker Grenson has launched its first sustainably made shoe using British wool. It has been produced using Cloudwool, an innovation making use of 100% local wool that would normally go to waste.

The exclusive sneaker, called the Grenson M.I.E Cloudwool, is made from a non-woven felt that goes from wool fibre to fabric, cutting down on the need for multiple processes and the energy usually required for spinning and weaving, “making British wool much more sustainable and efficient, with the material remaining pure, natural and fully compostable at the end of life”, said Grenson.

The sneaker comes with an Oxford upper, five brass eyelets, beige laces and a natural crepe rubber sole with a natural wool insock, priced £200.

Grenson said it worked closely with Doppelhaus, which creates low-impact materials for fashion and homewares, to develop the circular material to a point where it can be used in shoemaking.

Tim Little, Creative Director and CEO, said: “We were approached by the London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins to work with Doppelhaus on this collaboration and are pleased to launch the sneaker exclusively on the Grenson website.

“[It] looks quirky, but very natural and beautiful, and we really believe that by working with innovative companies in this way we will further our own knowledge, and that of our followers, when it comes to sustainable practices.”

Graham Clark, Director of Marketing at British Wool added: “By using this locally sourced material, Grenson is supporting local sheep farmers whilst promoting the use of this environmental fibre in premium applications. With the high quality and durability of British wool, the customers can trust that they are getting a comfortable and long-lasting product, whilst doing their bit for the environment too.”
