Asda’s fashion brand George stepped up its sustainability efforts on Monday with a pledge to use only recycled polyester by 2025 and a promise to further increase the transparency of its supply chain.

The UK supermarket said its upcoming Spring/Summer 2019 range will be the first to include homeware products such as cushions and throws made from recycled plastic bottles and blouses and dresses made from recycled polyester clothing.

The largest fashion retailer in the UK by volume has also committed to sourcing only certified sustainable viscose and sustainable cotton by 2025.

The pledges are part of wider efforts to improve the impact of Asda’s products on the environment amid growing consumer awareness of sustainability and ethical issues in the fashion sector.

As a member of the Microfibre Consortium, Asda will also aim to reduce microfibre shedding by educating consumers about garment care and is currently performing tests to understand the extent of shedding from different fabrics.

Finally, George at Asda will expand its supplier transparency with a list of its factories at the second tier, where clothes are dyed, printed and finished.

“As the second largest clothing retailer in the country, we have a responsibility to do the right thing by our customers, not only on the price and quality of our goods, but also on the impact we have on the world around us,” commented Nick Jones, Asda senior vice president for commercial, in a blog post.

“Our George sustainability strategy builds on the work we’ve done to date and sets stretching targets and commitments to reduce the environmental and social impact of our products.”
