The G7 leaders who just met in Bavaria have pledged to promote labour rights, decent working conditions and environmental protection in global supply chains.
The leaders, from the US, Japan, Canada, EU, UK, Italy, Germany and France, agreed to focus on better application of internationally recognized labour, social and environmental standards, principles and commitments, and said they want to build on the good practices learned from the Rana Plaza aftermath.
The Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013 killed 1,137 people and it has taken until now for those affected to receive compensation of £19.63m. The G7 leaders says a "Vision Zero Fund" will now be established in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
They stated: "The Fund will also add value to existing ILO projects with its aim of preventing and reducing workplace--related deaths and serious injuries by strengthening public frameworks and establishing sustainable business practices.
Access to the Fund will be conditional: the Fund will support
those recipients that commit themselves to prevention measures and the implementation of labour, social, environmental and safety standards."
The leaders also welcomed initiatives to promote the establishment of tools, such as apps, that will help consumers compare information on the validity and credibility of social and environmental product labels.
