Footfall increased by 1.8% in the week commencing 4 December compared to the previous seven days, but year-on-year figures show fewer people are visiting the shops compared to last year.

According to the latest data from retail intelligence experts Springboard, footfall was down 1.5% against the same week last year, despite only two full trading weeks left until Christmas Day.

Springboard said the result is, however, an improvement upon the annual decline last year of 2.5%.

The UK high street experienced the greatest weekly increase, with footfall up 3.1% week-on-week, while shopping centres reported a 1.9% rise in footfall during the seven-day period. But compared to the same week last year, neither location type saw an annual increase. High street footfall fell 2% year-on-year, while shopping centre footfall dropped 2.1%.

Retail parks continued to buck the trend by showing an annual increase of 0.5%, despite reporting a 1.4% decline in footfall week-on-week. Springboard said their performance was most likely to be due to retail parks acting as a hub for Black Friday Sales click and collections.

The results for the first full week of December come after a 0.2% rise in footfall in November compared to the same month last year.
