The shopping centre, home to national brands including Burton, New Look, Clarks, Dorothy Perkins, Peacocks, River Island and JD Sports, had received planning approval for a 86,000 sq ft extension last year.

“Due to an earlier incident, the centre is currently closed to the public. We will post more updates as we have them,” a spokesperson for The Mall said.

Pictures show flames rising up The Mall’s roof. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow, said on Twitter that there were no casualties.

One entrance at Walthamstow Central station was closed due to the smoke and Walthamstow bus station was evacuated, Transport for London announced. Pedestrians and motorists were advised to avoid the area, as roads were affected causing significant disruption.

Last year, The Mall’s owner Capital & Regional unveiled plans to build a new direct entrance to Walthamstow Central Station and bring in an additional grocery anchor and other ‘grab and go’ and casual dining names. The works are expected to commence in 2020.

The shopping centre is part of Capital & Regional’s portfolio of retail destinations, which also includes The Mall Luton, The Mall Blackburn, The Mall Maidstone, the Mall Wood Green, Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead and Exchange in Ilford.
