Festive cheer for Westfield malls as footfall rises to record high

Westfield London and Westfield Stratford City have reported their “busiest ever” Christmas period, with festive footfall rising by 11% year-on-year.

The shopping centres, owned by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, saw a combined 15.6m visitors through their doors from the start of November.

350,000 shoppers visited the malls on Boxing Day, representing a 9% increase on the previous year.

Myf Ryan, Westfield’s chief marketing officer in Europe, said retailers enjoyed their best ever trading periods, “with some having to undertake emergency restocking”.

“The numbers are a testament to the investment we’ve made in putting the customer at the core and creating the very best environment and experience for our visitors and retailers alike. The expansion of Westfield London in the centre’s 10th anniversary year, including the creation of a dedicated Home Quarter for major homewares retailers, is just one example of that belief,” Ryan said.

The results come after months of disappointing results on the high street, with many fearing a brutal Christmas period.
