Fashion & retail companies voted best places to work for in the UK
British retailers are dominating LinkedIn’s ‘Top Companies to work for in 2017’ ranking, proving that despite tougher times on the high-street Brits still love to work where they shop.
John Lewis, Asos, Arcadia and Harrods have been chosen as the best companies to work for in the LinkedIn ranking, which is based on billions of actions by 23 million UK members. Retailers took eight of the top 20 spots, while technology giants and financial and professional services companies made up the rest.
The clear winner was John Lewis Partnership, taking the top spot for the second year running. The company, which includes John Lewis and Waitrose, was followed by Asos.com in the second place and Arcadia in the third. Harrods and Liberty Global completed the top 5 most sought after employers.
Sainsbury's landed the sixth spot, rising nine places from last year, while Selfridges and Burberry ranked 14th and 20th respectively.
"It is fantastic to see the retail industry, which offers such a variety of careers and opportunities, to continue to lead the way for prospective UK employees,” said Sarah Andrews, HR & Retail Director at Harrods. “Part of what makes Harrods such a special business is the diversity of roles we are able to offer, all under one roof.”
"We're delighted to have been named the most sought after employer in the UK for the second year running,” added Kate Corcoran, Director, Personnel Operations at John Lewis Partnership. “Attracting top talent is incredibly important as our business is owned by our Partners and LinkedIn plays a key role in this.”
The UK retail industry employs more workers than any other in the UK, but industry bodies have warned that the rapid growth of online shopping, currency spikes and rising business and living wage costs are threatening to change the sector forever.
The British Retail Consortium has estimated that up to 80,000 jobs are at risk of redundancy by 2020.
