A new exhibition called ‘Weavers of the Clouds: Textile Arts of Peru’ is opening at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London from June 21 until September 8 as a tribute to both historic and contemporary Peruvian costume.

The exhibition opens on 21 June and will run for two and a half months - Fashion and Textile Museum

“For decades, designers worldwide have been influenced by the traditional textiles of Peru. Weavers of the Clouds explores the processes and practices of both historic and contemporary Peruvian costume dating from pre-Hispanic to present day,” said the museum.

“The exhibition showcases rarely seen exotic objects from private collections and loans from specialist museums, clothing, rugs, festive attire, paintings, photographs and accessories that will take you on a cultural journey to the country's historical wealth,” it explained.

Works on display will include designs by Peruvian designers Meche Correa, Mozhdeh Matin and Chiara Macchiavello, as well as pieces by international designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Naeem Khan.

Peruvian textile art has evolved over the last two decades into a harmonious combination of traditional techniques, fabrics, colours and international fashion trends to create coveted luxury pieces for those who appreciate craftsmanship. This has kept the country’s cultural and historical heritage alive.

Curated by Hilary Sumon, the exhibition presents different styles of embroidery, fabrics and fibres from the different cultures of the country represented across textiles, clothing, photographs, paintings and illustrations.
