Italian luxury menswear label Ermenegildo Zegna has announced that Ron Johnson is now a member the board of directors of its parent company, Ermenegildo Zegna Holditalia SpA. Johnson, who notably worked for Apple, will contribute his technology know-how and futuristic vision to the long-established label specialised in luxury textiles and menswear.

Johnson is well-known for having led the development of the Apple Stores. A Harvard Business School graduate, Johnson began his career with US distributor Target Corporation. He made a name for himself after he was hired by Steve Jobs in 2000, developing and implementing the revolutionary Apple Store retail concept. Johnson oversaw the opening of over 400 Apple Stores in 13 countries.

After leaving Apple in 2011, he ran US department store chain JC Penney, which he attempted to relaunch, without achieving the same success he had with Apple. In 2014, Johnson set up Enjoy, the company that launched the Mobile Retail Store, a new breed of high-tech e-store tapped among others by major groups like telephony provider EE in the UK and by AT&T in the USA.

Johnson is a board member in various high-tech companies based in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and he is expected to help Zegna speed up its digital transformation.

“I am sure that Ron’s exceptional experience and creativity in traditional and online retail will contribute to [Zegna’s] success in dealing with the technological and cultural challenges facing the group, and to making our brand stronger than ever,” said the group's CEO Gildo Zegna.

Johnson will sit on Zegna's board alongside Angelo Zegna, Paolo Zegna, Ermenegildo Zegna, Domenico De Sole, Michele Norsa, Henry Peter, Anna Zegna Ferraris and Renata Zegna Schneider.

The Italian group recently overhauled its communication team, now led by Domenico Galluccio, formerly with Moncler.
