E-commerce: fraud up 173 % in 2015

Fraud affecting online sales has reportedly increased by 173% last year, with luxury goods and apparel among the most targeted sectors, together with high-tech products, food and electronics.

The information was reported by the Global Fraud Attack Index created by PYMNTS.com and Forter. The survey showed that the e-retailers' revenue share which is targeted by fraud attempts has apparently grown by 94%. The luxury goods sector is one of the rare ones showing a rise in the revenues figures threatened by fraud, up 4% in the year.

In 75% of cases, the attacks are carried out by 'bots'. Fraud carried out directly from areas outside of Europe and America represents only 70% of the attacks. However, these latter by themselves actually threaten as much as one third of all revenue potentially lost due to online fraud.
