Until recently, finding designer clothes in sizes beyond 14 UK (42 France) was impossible. Nowadays, some labels are no longer afraid to cross this boundary, as for example Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana, one of the first to proclaim in no uncertain terms its willingness to outfit curvy women, extending its women's size range to include XXL.

Dolce & Gabbana told FashionNetwork.com that “the size range for some items in the collection has been extended to 54 Italy (50 France, 22 UK).” Until now, the Italian label's sizes didn't extend beyond 48 Italy (16 UK). The majority of labels normally stop at size 14 UK.

Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana “have always cherished female sensuality in all its forms and expression,” stated the label. Indeed, Dolce & Gabbana has always glorified a certain type of sensual Mediterranean beauty, and its ad campaigns often feature voluptuous women with generous breasts and hips.

“Beauty isn’t a size, it's a state of mind, and attitude and courage make a woman beautiful,” said Dolce & Gabbana, whose intention is to “pay tribute to women, their morphology and all types of beauty.”

Times have changed, and the market has evolved. Plus-size women and men represent an increasingly important market segment and a genuine business challenge. Inclusivity also plays a part, an increasingly influential factor in the new strategies deployed by luxury labels. This explains their gradual shift in approach towards a clientèle which, until now, was quite simply overlooked.

This year, the LVMH group has taken a significant step in this direction with the launch of Fenty, Rihanna’s high-end label, a part of whose collection is available in plus sizes. Others are likely to soon follow suit.
