Department stores support Mayor of London's suffragette campaign

Some of London’s most famous department stores including Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Fortnum & Mason have joined the Mayor of London’s #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign to celebrate the centenary since the first UK women won the right to vote.

This week’s activities include the smashing of shop front windows and curated window displays supporting female empowerment and the role of the suffragette movement in the fight for equality.
Harvey Nichols invited eight female leaders to smash its windows, an action that mirrored a similar campaign led by suffragettes in 1912 to demonstrate that the Government cared more about broken windows than the women’s vote.
“A century later, we asked a new generation of women to break our windows again. Why? To remind the world that there is still work to be done,” said Group Director of Marketing and Creative Deb Bee.

Harrods and Fortnum & Mason also unveiled window displays featuring suffragette ribbons, sashes and banners, with information about the women’s equality movement and famous quotes.
The campaign celebrates the women of London and the progress made since women gained the right to vote in the UK.
The displays will run throughout London Fashion Week.
