Decathlon UK is continuing to expand its physical presence across the country with the opening of its first Welsh store. The company has opened a concession store near Cardiff after its online sales in Wales soared to almost £2.5million in 2020.

The concession is in the Tesco store at Culverhouse Cross and marks the brand’s ongoing physical store expansion in Britain.

The brand first arrived in the UK 22 years ago and is now one of the country’s major sports retailers. It’s been very active on the new store front of late with recent openings in Leeds and Bromley. And this new Welsh debut means it now has locations in all four of the UK’s individual nations, with 47 sites across the UK as a whole.

The French-owned company said it has wanted to open in Wales for some time and it online success during the pandemic in the principality underlined that desire.

The new concessions will also support the online operation, being a new click & collect location. With a staff of 12, the firm expects it to serve around 90,000 customers in its first year.

The opening in Tesco comes as UK supermarkets continue seeking partnerships to make the most of the abundant space available in their stores, while adding brands that could also boost footfall and dwell time in a way that might benefit Tesco products too.
