Debenhams announced on Friday plans to create a seventh Magasin du Nord store in Denmark, adding a new site to the highly successful department store chain it acquired in 2009.

The 7,500-square-metre site is planned to open in 2018 in Aalborg, the fourth largest city in the country. The new Magasin store will be an anchor site in the Friis Shopping Centre, offering fashion, beauty, homewares and gourmet foods.

According to the British retailer, performance of the chain has been strong with three Magasin du Nord sites tracking in its top ten stores in terms of turnover.

The company will invest £12m to create the new store.

Debenhams International Director David Smith said, “We are delighted to strengthen our presence in Denmark in line with our strategy to drive our international expansion.  The Magasin du Nord is extremely successful with a strong mix of contemporary brands.”

Magasin du Nord began trading under the name of Emil Vett & Co. in Aarhus in 1879. The brand has six department stores operating in Denmark.
