Cult Beauty has announced it will end the sale of makeup brushes made with badger hair after a PETA exposé uncovered the gruesome side of China’s badger-brush industry.

The company will join a group of more than 90 beauty and personal care companies to adopt a ban on badger hair, including Procter & Gamble, Morphe, Nars, Penhaligon’s and Floris London.

"I've spoken to the team about this and agree that [badger hair] should be taken off the site," said Cult Beauty CEO and co-founder Alexia Inge. "We have removed this from the site and will not be restocking [it].”

Thought to be one of the UK’s fastest-growing online beauty businesses, Cult Beauty is an online specialist selling brands such as Benefit, Drunk Elephant and GHD.

According to Sky News, the company is working with JP Morgan to explore a possible sale, although a formal process is not yet underway and may not lead to a transaction until 2020.

In the year ended May 2018, Cult Beauty doubled sales to nearly £69 million, but operating profits remained flat at £3.7 million.

Commenting on the retailer’s decision to ban badger hair, Peta director Elisa Allen said: “No make-up brush is worth tormenting and killing a sensitive wild animal.

“By banning the sale of badger-hair brushes on its hugely influential platform, Cult Beauty is helping Peta push the cosmetics industry in a kinder direction.”
