Independent British eyewear firm Cubitts has opened its ninth bricks-and-mortar location on Portobello Road in the heart of Notting Hill.

Surrounded by the pastel streets of this famous London destination, the store takes its interior design inspiration from the nearby Trellick Tower and the wider work of its architect, Ernő Goldfinger.

Signage and shelving echo the concertina signs of Goldfinger’s now demolished brutalist Odeon cinema in Elephant and Castle, while point of sale details take their inspiration from the furniture he made for his own home at Willow Road in Hampstead.

Display plinths pay homage to the Italian acetate used by Cubitts to make its range of spectacles and sunglasses, and the store’s colour palette evokes Marrakech’s Jardin Majorelle in a nod to neighbouring Golborne Road’s reputation as ‘Little Morocco’.

To celebrate the launch, the Notting Hill store will offer an exclusive made-to-measure collection consisting of four frames inspired by the local area. The Golborn, Westbourne, Portobello and Walmer styles are available in a choice of optical or sun, and customers can choose from the brand’s almost 200 acetate colours and patterns.

Founded in 2013, Cubitts also has stores in King’s Cross, Covent Garden, Fitzrovia, Shoreditch, Soho, St James’s and Southwark.
