Crockett & Jones to exit Jermyn Street site as Turnbull & Asser expands

Published
Mar 17, 2023

High-end shoemaker/retailer Crockett & Jones is set to vacate one of its London stores as the property’s leaseholder, shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser, wants to expand into the space from its own store next door.

Crockett & Jones’ store at 69 Jermyn Street, which opened in 1997 and was the company’s first retail unit, will end trading there on 31 March.

However it’s not completely bad news as the shoemaker will retain its presence on what’s one of London’s premier streets for heritage high-end menswear, as it opened a larger flagship store at 92 Jermyn Street in 2011.

James Fox, marketing director at Crockett & Jones, told The Telegraph newspaper: “From our point of view it’s obviously a shame. As a business we are disappointed to essentially have our hands forced because we don’t own the building.”

However, there could be a silver lining as he added that the company is now close to securing a new, even larger London store “very close” to Jermyn Street.

He also noted that the situation with Turnbull & Asser had been “amicable”, adding that all the staff at 69 Jermyn Street will be given new roles within the business.

Crockett & Jones was founded in 1879 in Northampton and is one of Britain’s premier heritage shoemakers, with stores in Knightsbridge, New York, Paris and Brussels. It was given a royal warrant by the Prince of Wales (now King Charles) in 2017.

Turnbull & Asser, meanwhile, was founded in 1885 and was the first recipient of a warrant from the Prince in 1980.

Both companies have dressed several James Bond actors with Crockett & Jones shoes worn by Daniel Craig in the films Skyfall and Spectre, while Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan wore Turnbull & Asser shirts.
