The degree of optimism that consumers feel about the state of economy, their financial situation and future retail spending improved by 9.5 points in September, reaching the highest level recorded in 2016 according to Verdict Retail’s Consumer Confidence Tracker.

This was 21.8 points higher than the levels witnessed in July, however a fair amount of optimism still remains with a third of consumers still expecting the economy to worsen over the next six months.

The poll of 2,000 UK consumers also shows that views on personal finances strengthened by 4.6 points this month, despite many consumers earning less on their savings as a result of the fall in interest rates.

Zoe Mills, Analyst at Verdict Retail said: “While consumer sentiment fell heavily after the referendum, there has not been any major economic shocks since, as the process of leaving the EU has not begun, and consumers have returned to a ‘business as usual’ stance. However, the UK economy is likely to become more turbulent when the process of leaving begins next year, and sentiment will be volatile.”

Perhaps reflecting the degree of pessimism among consumers, the treat spend index, which explores the affordability of spending in non-essentials declined by 1.9 points.
