Selfridges has announced it enjoyed a “strong performance” during the all important Christmas period, lifted by sales of vegan food products, toys, men’s fashion and beauty products.

Sales at the high-end department store increased 5% in the month of December until Christmas Eve.

This was boosted by a standout performance from the retailer’s vegan food category, with vegan confectionery sales up 96% on the previous year. A newly-launched vegan hamper sold out.

As expected, the toys category recorded a healthy jump in sales, up 31% year-on-year.
But how did fashion and beauty fare? Selfridges said menswear sales grew by 11% during the period, but made no mention about the womenswear segment.  The Selfridges store in Manchester opened a new Accessories Hall in October and Selfridges Oxford Circus hosted an exclusive Instagram pop-up store from 5-15 December.

Meanwhile, beauty sales enjoyed a 10% uplift, bolstered by the launch of a beauty concierge service, which allows customers to book treatments across all brands and beauty masterclasses with industry experts. The service is available at Selfridges Manchester Trafford, Manchester Exchange Square and Oxford Circus.

Managing director Simon Forster said: “We are pleased to have delivered another strong performance over the Christmas period. We always aim to offer a great selection of exclusive products and extraordinary customer experiences, and this year has been no exception.

“2020 marks the start of a vital new decade in the race to secure a sustainable future. As a business with sustainability at its heart, Selfridges will be gearing up towards a major new campaign that will set the direction for the next 10 years of our journey.”
