The University of East London has recruited London fashion designer Beatrice Newman, who has dressed top stars such as Rita Ora, Alesha Dixon and Ellie Goulding, as head of the fashion design department.

The womenswear and knitwear designer has made a career designing intricate pieces for celebrities to wear at red carpet events and ceremonies. Paloma Faith, Anna Friel and The Noisettes are some of her clients.

The influence in traditional crafts have earned her several design prizes, including the Hand and Lock Prize for embroidery in 2009 and a sponsorship from the Framework Knitters Guild in the same year.

Most recently, she has worked as fashion designer and freelance consultant, and taught at Ravensbourne University in North Greenwich as subject leader of the MA fashion course.

She commented: “I am thrilled to be working at UEL, heading up their fashion design courses.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to nurture new talent and to help students to express their creativity through fresh ideas and concepts. Our UEL fashion design courses are a springboard for newcomers to discover their talent. Who knows? They might one day also become designers to top stars!”
