Leather handbag brand Cambridge Satchel Company is entering a new decade with an eye on China and a new location for its London flagship store.

The brand’s Covent Garden store has closed and will be relocating to Neal Street in Seven Dials to take advantage of the area’s mix of independent retailers, according to Press Association.

Staff working at the previous London flagship store, which closed last month, will be transferred to the new outlet.

This is the third London relocation for the accessories business since it launched 10 years ago, with its first ever store located on the nearby Shorts Gardens. Cambridge Satchel Company also operates stores in Cambridge, Edinburgh, Brighton and Oxford.

“We have chosen Seven Dials as the location for our new flagship shop as we believe this is where we feel most at home,” Founder Julie Deane explained.

“Our new Neal Street flagship shop is midway between our first home and our previous James Street location, and we believe this is exactly where we should be. The streets are lined with eclectic independent brands that brim with creative atmosphere.”

ASIAN EXPANSION

Last year, Cambridge Satchel Company launched a Chinese-language version of its website in a bid to attract more Asian shoppers, and it has recently partnered with digital commerce agency Web2Asia to further expand its online footprint in China.

“We view this partnership as a positive step in helping our brand strengthen and consolidate how we trade in Asia particularly China, regardless of the Brexit outcome. Export is vitally important to us as British manufacturers,” Deane said.

Inspired by traditional leather school bags, the business manufactures all products in Great Britain. The bags are made from 100% leather and can be personalised with a range of embossing letters and characters.
