CUNY to hold the Global Fashion Capitals Conference on October 13

Published
Oct 9, 2015

On Tuesday, October 13, the Fashion Studies Program at The Graduate Center at CUNY will hold the Global Fashion Capitals Conference. The one-day symposium is presented in collaboration with the School of Visual, Media & Performing Arts at Brooklyn College and The Museum at FIT.

A still from The True Cost (2015), directed by Andrew Morgan - The True Cost/The City University of New York

The Conference will consist of two round table discussions about what makes a fashion city and future fashion in New York City; a film screening of The True Cost (2015), directed by Andrew Morgan who will follow the screening with a Q&A; and it will conclude with a conversation with designer, Reem Acra, and Valerie Steele, the director of the Museum of FIT.

Other topics that will be addressed at the conference will pertain to social media and the fashion industry, how labor, craft and design will survive in the era of Instagram, new technologies, and humanitarian sensibilities and politics.

The Conference is free and open to the public, and registration can be done on the CUNY website. The morning session will take place on the FIT campus, and the afternoon session will take place at the Graduate Center, CUNY, in the Proshansky Auditorium. Registration for both sessions is open now.

The event is backed by the Women’s Studies Certificate Program, the Master in Women’s Studies, The Committee on Globalization and Social Change, Data & Society, and The Futures Initiative.
