Avon rep numbers surge, crisis pushes many to explore new opportunities
Avon has said the number of people signing up to sell its products has doubled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and the beauty company is expecting a “tidal wave” of sign-ups over the coming months as women explore new ways of supplementing their income.
Avon relies on five million reps globally to distribute its cosmetics products, enabling women to sell items directly to friends, family and neighbours using their social networks and digital tools.
New rep signs-ups increased by 114% between 23 March and 7 June compared with the same period last year.
It comes amid a looming jobs crisis in the UK, with a decline in spending expected to threaten thousands of jobs this year as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
To support new sellers, Avon has reduced the threshold to earn from £90 to £1 of sales, which means new reps can now start receiving commission from their first sale.
And Avon, which was traditionally a door-to-door company, now provides each representative with a personalised website and online store to take orders.
Mirroring a trend in the wider retail sector, the company’s online sales have remained particularly resilient during the outbreak. According to BBC News, Avon’s digital transactions were three times higher in the first six months of 2020 than they were in the first half of 2019.
Angela Cretu, Avon CEO, said: “As the recession tightens its grasp on communities in the wake of Covid-19, people are looking for new ways to earn.
“Avon has been providing an opportunity for our reps to earn and learn by selling through their social networks for nearly 135 years, and we’ve reinvented our model of social selling for the next era. Helping our community of Avon reps to embrace online opportunities, we have supported them with video workshops on building their business online, as well as tips and insights on how to make the most of social media.
“As people look for new flexible ways to earn, we are ready for a tidal wave of new sign-ups and hope our rep recruitment drive will help female entrepreneurs break through these difficult times.”
