Asos workers walk out over lack of Covid-19 protection, firm denies it's unsafe

Some 500 Asos warehouse workers walked out of shifts in Yorkshire on Saturday claiming they couldn’t follow the government's advice to stay two metres away from other people.

Asos

The fashion retailer had been criticised by a worker’s union which accused the company of “playing Russian roulette with people’s lives”, although it denied this.

Asos insisted its operations are in line with official public health and government guidance, with a spokesperson saying: “We are striking the right balance between keeping our warehouse operational for the good of employees and the wider economy, and maintaining the health and safety of staff.

“An environmental health officer visited and was happy,” the company added.

It's a difficult situation with a certain amount of demonisation in the popular press of any retailer trying to continue during the pandemic but also understandable concerns on the part of workers.

A number of other retailers have already conceded that they couldn't guarantee a completely safe environment for their staff and have closed their webstores as a result.
