Asos has signed a new five-year contract with parcel delivery firm DPD that will see at least 50% of deliveries in London served by electric vehicles only.

Asos is the latest fashion company to announce measures to reduce its environmental impact following increased pressure from global activists. This week, luxury goods conglomerate Kering and mall operators Hammerson and Intu committed to become carbon neutral.

The DPD deal includes a provision for at least half of deliveries within the London Ultra Low Emission Zone to be served by DPD electric cars, helping Asos reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.

DPD opened the UK's first all-electric parcel depot in Westminster last October and is investing in more electric vehicles to meet its goal of having 600 on the road by 2021.

DPD has worked alongside Asos for over ten years. CEO Dwain McDonald said: “The next five years will see the delivery landscape transformed again with greener, more sustainable deliveries, more geo-location innovation and of course Brexit. We're ahead of the game on all three fronts, but the investment in our all-electric fleet and depot network is key for us. We expect to have the largest EV fleet in the industry and plan to double the number of electric vehicles year on year."
