US fashion and lifestyle brand Anthropologie, owned by retail group URBN, is launching in Spain. On 1 February, Anthropologie will open the doors of its first store in the country at number 27 Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona.

Anthropologie is replacing Italian firm Twinset on the prestigious shopping street, occupying a space of 1,800 square metres across two floors, where it will showcase its womenswear, accessories and homeware collections. The brand’s team has also prepared a range created by local artisans that will be exclusively available at its first Spanish store in Barcelona. The shop will be adjacent to London based brand COS and sportswear giant Nike.

“To come to such an innovative and dynamic city feels very natural to us. We know from our website and stores in London that our style attracts a lot of Spanish consumers, so opening a dedicated store seemed like a logical step,” Peter Ruis, international executive director of Antropologie said. The executive, who was previously CEO at Jigsaw, took over the brand’s international business in July last year following the departure of David McCreight.

Founded in Pennsylvania in 1993 by Dick Hayne, currently CEO of URBN, the brand trades from over 200 stores worldwide. Anthropologie is part of URBN Group, which also owns brands including Urban Outfitters, Free People, BHLDN, Terrain and Vetri Family.

In the third quarter of the year ended October 31, the company increased revenues by 9% to $973.53m (€853.77m). Anthropologie contributed $385m (€337.64m) in sales, up 9.4% on the previous year. During the period, it entered China through TMall and launched in Israel in collaboration with online platform Terminal X. Urban Outfitters has had a subsidiary in Spain since 2014 and has a store in the Triangle shopping mall in Barcelona.
