Ruis will join the Urban Outfitters-owned company from July 9, reporting to president of Anthropologie group Andrew Carnie.

In the newly created global role, it is understood that Ruis will look after all territories outside the U.S., Canada and China, which includes the UK, where it operates 11 stores.

His appointment comes three months after David McCreight, former CEO of Anthropologie and president of Urban Outfitters, departed the group. Carnie and Hillary Super, co-president of Anthropologie, took over his responsibilities.

The former CEO of Jigsaw, Ruis has also served as executive buying and brand director at John Lewis, and held product and brand management roles at Levi Strauss & Co. and Ted Baker.

The news comes as Anthropologie looks to hone in on Europe. Most recently, the retailer opened a store in Dusseldorf, Germany.

As of 2018, Anthropologie operates 240 stores in the U.S., in addition to its global network that boasts 227 stores and a number of wholesale accounts.

In its most recent earnings report for three months ending April 30, parent company Urban Outfitters Inc said first-quarter sales at stores open at least a year rose 10 percent, pushed on by gains across all brands that includes Free People, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie.

Net income for the quarter rose to $41.3 million, or 38 cents per share, in the quarter from $11.9 million, or 1 cent per share, a year earlier.
